Finca Granadilla is from the Lempira area of Western Honduras. Owned by Hernan Castro, Granadillas has 15 hectares, 13 of which are cultivated. San Andreas is a small municipality within the state of Lempira, with a population of 15,000 people primarily involved in the cultivation of coffee. Don Hernan has four brothers and three sisters; his brothers are all coffee farmers and his sisters teach at the local school. He is a man of few words, but when asked what he finds most challenging during harvest time he pauses and answers with a frank smile, “Nothing, we love it.”
The farm sits at about 1,450 meters above sea level, with an average temperature of 71 degrees and grows Lempira and Ihcafe 90. Both are Honduran varieties based on catimor, designed to reduce insect damage and increase yield. The pickers at Granadilla are taught to only pick the red ripe cherries, and they pay particular attention to the washing, fermentation and drying of their coffees to create exceptional coffee.
